Week 2: Ball skills

Personal, Social and Emotional development

During circle time talk about ball sports. Who can think of sports that involve the use of a ball? Who has been to a game or match? Who watches sport on television and who do they watch it with? Which sports do they enjoy watching best and what do they like about them? (PS4)

Take all opportunities to help children identify when they are working as part of a team. Ask them to think about which sports are played as teams and what being part of a team means. (PS8)

Provide freely available activities that encourage the fine motor skills needed for throwing and catching, and the dexterity and hand-eye coordination needed for aiming in planned directions. Include balls, quoits, hoops and beanbags as well as activities such as jigsaws, construction, dressing and undressing dolls, dressing-up clothes with a range of fastenings, dough and clay for moulding, threading activities and of course writing, drawing and mark making. (PS12)
